The Waterloo Public Interest Research Group is pleased to announce that over 300 individuals have signed our letter calling for the University of Waterloo to reinstate recently-fired food service worker, Marilyn Boutilier. Our letter has been signed by a broad range of the UW community including staff, faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, UW retirees and alumni. Community members from the Waterloo Region have also signed on. “We received many signatures and messages of support for Marilyn throughout the holiday break and it has continued into the start of the Winter term” says WPIRG staff Alex Diceanu. “We continue to circulate our letter on campus and we are hopeful even more members of the campus community will add their voices to our request that Marilyn be reinstated as more people become aware of the issue.”

“We have been hearing over and over again about how much people enjoyed her presence at Browser’s Café” says Sepehr Mohaddes, WPIRG Board Member.  “A large portion of those who signed the letter come from the Dana Porter library where Browser’s Café is located and from nearby buildings whose staff frequent the cafe. It is clear that over her 28 years of service to UW, Marilyn has touched a lot of people.”

WPIRG’s “Public Letter Seeking the Reinstatement of Marilyn Boutilier” asks the UW administration to “find a corrective measure more compatible with both the nature of the offence and with the principles to which UW is committed, and return Ms. Boutilier to her former position.” The letter, with the additional signatures included, can be read below. WPIRG will continue to receive signatures over the holiday break. You may email alex@wpirg.org to add your name to the letter or sign our online petition here.
